Your Water World
What does the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority do for its residents? And how do we ensure that the water remains clean and our socks stay dry in the future? We would like to take you, as a resident of our area, on a tour and tell you our story in words and images. By taking you on a tour of our area, we will show you our work in progress. And while cycling and walking, we challenge you to look at the environment with different eyes. Experience, discover, and immerse yourself in your own Water World!
The Netherlands and water are inextricably linked
Since the Middle Ages, we have been engaged in a battle against rising water levels.
- We kept the water at bay with dikes and dike passages (also known as coupures).
- Waterways and mills were used to drain excess water. Nowadays, pumping stations have taken over the task of the mills almost everywhere.
- But more is needed to keep our feet dry. Climate change is presenting us with additional challenges such as flooding. Or, conversely, drought.
- In addition, we also want to keep our water clean for our own health.
Noorderzijlvest
To ensure that we can live safely with water and that there is sufficient clean water in every season, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority has installed numerous locks, weirs, pumping stations, culverts, and purification plants throughout its working area. Each of these has its own function and is a familiar feature of the landscape for many residents. On the Your Water World website, we invite you to view this area through different eyes.
